As we are preparing to become Bnei Mitzvah in March, we wanted to do something to help people in our community, especially those whose lives have become much harder during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though many people in New Jersey have been dealing with hunger, the pandemic has made things much worse. According to Fulfill, the food insecurity rate has increased 40% since COVID-19. Before COVID-19, 8.7% of New Jersey residents were food insecure, and now 13.5% are projected to be food insecure. This means, more than 1.2 million people in New Jersey face hunger every day. Nearly 400,000 of them are children.
We are organizing a community food drive for Fulfill, the main food bank serving Monmouth & Ocean Counties. Each year, Fulfill provides food and other resources for over 215,000 of our neighbors who are food insecure. And they have of course been busier than ever during COVID. This drive is perfect for the holiday of Purim when one of the mitzvot is to give to the poor.
